It was the Parliament’s unity and tenacity that brought about this
good deal on the amending budgets for 2014, the 2015 budget and an EU
payment plan. This arrangement allows the EU Institutions to remain
credible and strengthens our priorities on jobs and growth”, stated EPP
Group Spokesman José Manuel Fernandes MEP.
This EU budget deal stabilises the EU payments problem and prevents
the collapse of the budget. The deal delivers €4 billion to tackle the
high amount of unpaid bills in 2014 and settles a total of €145,321.5
million in commitments and €141,214 million in payments for 2015,
largely reversing the Council’s
exaggerated cuts from its previous position.
The agreement reinforces commitments for programmes associated with jobs and growth whilst enhancing EU external solidarity focusing on humanitarian aid. The EU must take responsibility and respect its commitments, paying what it owes and implementing its priorities. It is vital to get the programmes and policy priorities established for 2014-2020 promptly in motion.
“We have agreed with the Commission and the Council on having a plan to tackle the unpaid bills. The EU should always comply with the same rigor asked of the Member States. This plan mustn’t delay new programmes or jeopardise the MFF 2014-2020. The Parliament will keep scrutinising the respect of EU commitments and the protection of jobs, growth and social cohesion”, concluded the Portuguese MEP.
